Iran Ceasefire Deadline Looms; 2nd Round of Talks Imminent
President Trump declared Wednesday that the war with Iran is “very close to over” and signaled that a second round of direct talks could resume in Pakistan within days. Vice President Vance is expected to lead the next round before the two-week ceasefire expires on approximately April 22. While Tehran said Wednesday it had “no information” about a new meeting, Pakistan is actively working to arrange talks. Saudi Arabia is also pushing Washington to lift its naval blockade of the Strait of Hormuz and return to the table.1, 2, 3
Trump Renews Pope Leo Feud; Urges Him to ‘Educate Himself’
President Trump escalated his public confrontation with Pope Leo XIV on Wednesday, posting on Truth Social that the pontiff should educate himself about Iran’s killing of “at least 42,000 innocent, unarmed protesters.” The latest salvo deepens a feud that began Sunday, and Republican strategists continue to worry about its impact on Catholic voters, who gave Trump a 12-point advantage in 2024. Several prominent conservative Catholics have urged Trump to stand down.4, 5
FISA Spy Program Faces Make-or-Break House Vote This Week
With Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act set to expire on April 20, Speaker Johnson is pushing for a House floor vote this week on an 18-month clean extension. Trump, the Joint Chiefs Chairman, the CIA director, and the FBI director have all urged passage. However, more than a dozen Republican holdouts and the 98-member Congressional Progressive Caucus are opposed, leaving the outcome uncertain. If Congress fails to act, the surveillance authority that targets foreign communications will lapse.6, 7, 8
Bondi Contempt Push Loses Steam as GOP Allies Waver
Two House Republicans who helped subpoena former Attorney General Pam Bondi signaled Wednesday they are reluctant to pursue contempt charges after she failed to appear for her April 14 deposition on the Epstein files. Rep. Tim Burchett called Bondi “out” and suggested Congress focus on those with actual knowledge. Rep. Lauren Boebert declined to rule it out but showed little urgency. Democrats, led by Rep. Ro Khanna, vowed to press ahead with contempt proceedings, arguing Congress has the votes.9, 10
Fed Chair Nominee Warsh Gets Senate Hearing Date: April 21
Senate Banking Committee Chairman Tim Scott confirmed Wednesday that Kevin Warsh, President Trump’s nominee for Federal Reserve chair, will face his confirmation hearing on April 21. The hearing was previously delayed due to paperwork. Warsh is married to cosmetics heiress Jane Lauder, with a reported net worth of approximately $1.9 billion. His confirmation will shape monetary policy at a time when war-driven energy prices have complicated the inflation outlook.11, 12

California Governor’s Race Reshuffled After Swalwell Exit
The California governor’s race entered a new phase Wednesday as candidates competed to absorb the support that had belonged to former Rep. Eric Swalwell, who suspended his campaign Monday. Swalwell had been the leading Democratic candidate at roughly 17 percent in polling. The crowded field now includes Democrats Katie Porter, Tom Steyer, Antonio Villaraigosa, and Xavier Becerra, alongside Republicans Steve Hilton and Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco. The June 2 primary is less than seven weeks away.13, 14
Trump Rejects Colorado Disaster Aid a Second Time
President Trump on Monday upheld his denial of FEMA disaster relief for Colorado after Democratic Governor Jared Polis appealed decisions to reject aid for wildfires and floods. The final denial came 152 days after Polis originally applied. A nonpartisan analysis found that Trump has approved roughly 84 percent of disaster requests from states he carried in 2024, but only about 42 percent from states that voted for Kamala Harris, prompting accusations of partisan politics with disaster funding.15, 16
Florida Redistricting Session in Jeopardy Days Before Start
Governor Ron DeSantis signaled Tuesday that Florida’s special legislative session on congressional redistricting, set to begin Monday, April 20, may be postponed. No proposed maps have been submitted by the Legislature, and internal divisions between DeSantis and House Speaker Daniel Perez have stalled the process. DeSantis said a “little tweak” to the schedule was possible but declined to confirm a delay. Florida Republicans had hoped the session would yield two to five additional congressional seats before November’s midterms.17, 18
