Iran Ceasefire Strains as Trump Issues New Threats
The two-week U.S.-Iran ceasefire announced Tuesday night is showing significant signs of strain. Trump expressed optimism about a permanent deal on Thursday but also threatened new tariffs on any country supplying weapons to Iran and warned Tehran over proposed fees for Strait of Hormuz passage. Iranian officials have insisted the strait will not fully reopen until Israeli strikes on Lebanon cease, a condition Israel has flatly rejected.1,2,3
Congress Returns Monday; DHS and War Powers Votes Expected
Congress returns from its two-week Easter recess on Monday, April 13, facing at least two critical votes. House Republicans are expected to act on the Senate-passed DHS funding bill that could end the record partial shutdown. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer has also confirmed Democrats will bring a war powers resolution to the floor next week, forcing a vote on whether Trump must seek congressional authorization to continue military operations against Iran.4,5,6
DHS Shutdown Hits Day 56; TSA Staffing Losses Mount
The partial Department of Homeland Security shutdown enters its 56th day on Friday, still the longest in American history. Speaker Mike Johnson has agreed to bring the Senate-passed bipartisan funding bill to the floor next week, though Freedom Caucus opposition remains uncertain. More than 500 TSA officers have resigned since the shutdown began, and wait times at major airports continue to run two to three hours.7,8
GOP Silence on Iran War Masks Deep Internal Division
Republican congressional leaders have remained largely silent as Trump moved in a single day from threatening to obliterate Iranian civilization to announcing a ceasefire. An Associated Press report found many GOP lawmakers are privately alarmed but reluctant to speak out ahead of midterms. When Congress reconvenes Monday, Republicans will face votes on war spending and a 60-day authorization deadline that approaches in late April.9,10
USPS Seeks 82-Cent Stamp Price; Freezes Pension Payments Today
The U.S. Postal Service announced Thursday it is seeking to raise first-class stamp prices from 78 cents to 82 cents, effective July 12, pending regulatory approval. The cash-strapped agency also suspended employer pension contributions beginning today, saving an estimated $200 million every two weeks. USPS officials have warned that without congressional action to raise the agency’s $15 billion debt limit, it could exhaust funds by February 2027.11,12

Swalwell Misconduct Accusers Said to Be Nearing Public Disclosure
Allegations of sexual misconduct against California gubernatorial candidate Eric Swalwell continued to build this week, with attorney and activist Cheyenne Hunt stating she is working with multiple women who are preparing to go public. Hunt said some women believe they are bound by nondisclosure agreements, a claim the Swalwell campaign vigorously denies. No formal accusations have been filed or independently verified. California’s June 2 primary is now fewer than eight weeks away.13,14,15
Virginia Redistricting Ballot: Today Is the Mail Ballot Deadline
Today is the final day Virginia voters can request a mail ballot for the April 21 redistricting referendum. A “yes” vote would allow the Democrat-controlled General Assembly to implement new congressional maps expected to favor Democrats in ten of the state’s eleven districts. The Virginia Supreme Court is still reviewing the amendment’s constitutionality while allowing voting to continue, meaning a court could still invalidate the outcome after Election Day.16,17
Florida AG Opens Formal Investigation Into OpenAI, ChatGPT
Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier announced Thursday that his office has opened a formal investigation into OpenAI and its ChatGPT chatbot, citing national security concerns and alleging the platform may have contributed to the Florida State University mass shooting last year. Uthmeier said subpoenas will be issued shortly. OpenAI said it will cooperate fully. The probe is the latest effort by Florida to assert state-level authority over major technology companies.18,19
