Iran Ceasefire May Be Extended; Trump Says ‘Amazing Days Ahead’
The United States and Iran moved closer Wednesday to extending their two-week ceasefire beyond its April 22 expiration date, according to regional officials who told the Associated Press that both sides had given an ‘in principle agreement’ to an extension. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt denied that Washington had formally requested an extension but said a second round of peace talks in Islamabad is ‘very likely.’ President Trump told ABC News he expects viewers to witness ‘an amazing two days ahead’ and said Iran’s new leadership is ‘quite reasonable.’ Iran’s top military commander warned, however, that Tehran would block all Persian Gulf and Red Sea shipping if the U.S. naval blockade on Iranian ports is not lifted. 1, 2, 3
Senate Blocks Iran War Powers Resolution for Fourth Time
The Senate voted 47-52 on Wednesday to reject a Democratic-led war powers resolution that would have required congressional authorization for the United States to continue military operations against Iran. It was the fourth such defeat since the war began on February 28. Kentucky’s Rand Paul was the lone Republican in favor; Pennsylvania’s John Fetterman was the lone Democrat opposed; and West Virginia’s Jim Justice abstained. Senator Tammy Duckworth of Illinois, a combat veteran who lost both legs in Iraq, led the effort. Democrats pledged to keep forcing votes weekly, warning that the 60-day War Powers Act threshold arrives at the end of April. 4, 5, 6
Foreign Surveillance (FISA) Vote Derailed; Program Expires Monday
A House vote on renewing the government’s controversial FISA program was canceled Wednesday after Republican holdouts demanded last-minute changes. The program in question, Section 702 of the FISA Act, allows U.S. spy agencies to monitor foreign targets overseas without a warrant, though it incidentally sweeps up Americans’ communications in the process. The authority expires April 20. A bloc of Republicans wants new warrant requirements before any American’s data can be searched; House leadership wants a clean 18-month extension. Speaker Johnson said a vote would come ‘tonight or tomorrow.’ President Trump, who urged lawmakers to ‘KILL FISA’ in 2024, reversed course this week and is pushing Republicans to pass an extension, citing national security during the Iran conflict. 7, 8, 9
Trump’s FY2027 Budget Under Fire; $1.5T Defense Request Debated
White House Budget Director Russell Vought faced sharp questioning Wednesday before the House Budget Committee on the Trump administration’s fiscal year 2027 proposal, which seeks $1.5 trillion in defense spending, roughly 42 percent above current levels, while cutting non-defense programs by $73 billion. Democrats cited a Congressional Budget Office projection that existing law will add $3.4 trillion to the deficit by 2034. Vought is appearing before the Senate Budget Committee on Thursday. Proposed cuts target K-12 education funding, green energy programs, and the National Science Foundation, which faces a 54 percent reduction. 10, 11

Virginia Redistricting Referendum Tightens Before Tuesday Vote
Early voting data released this week shows a tighter-than-expected contest ahead of Virginia’s April 21 redistricting referendum, which if passed would allow the Democratic-controlled legislature to redraw congressional maps and shift the state’s 6-5 Democratic congressional delegation to a lopsided 10-1 advantage. A State Navigate poll shows 51 percent in favor versus 45 percent opposed, but a Washington Post/Schar School survey flagged a Republican enthusiasm gap as a concern for Democrats. Northern Virginia turnout is running approximately 46 percent higher than the same period last fall. Speaker Johnson campaigned in Virginia over the weekend alongside Republican incumbents whose districts would be eliminated under the new map. 12, 13, 14
Former Pence Aide Troye Enters Virginia Race as a Democrat
Olivia Troye, who served as a counterterrorism and homeland security adviser to Vice President Mike Pence and became a vocal Trump critic after leaving the White House in 2020, announced Tuesday she is running for Congress as a Democrat in Virginia’s proposed new 7th Congressional District, contingent on voters approving the redistricting referendum. She joins a competitive primary field that includes former Virginia First Lady Dorothy McAuliffe and several state legislators. In her launch video, Troye said, ‘Trump does not intimidate me. I confronted him when it mattered most, and I am prepared to do so again.’ 15, 16
