Trump’s Iran Deadline Tonight at 8 p.m. ET; Massive Strikes Threatened if No Deal
President Trump declared Monday that his Tuesday-night deadline for Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz is final, warning that U.S. forces will begin striking Iranian bridges and power plants if no agreement is reached by 8:00 p.m. ET tonight. Iran has rejected a proposed 45-day ceasefire brokered through Pakistan, Egypt, and Turkey, insisting on a permanent end to the war. Indirect talks through Pakistan continue, with Vice President Vance and special envoy Steve Witkoff in contact with Iranian officials. Congressional leaders face renewed pressure to vote on war powers authority.1,2,3
Georgia Runoff Day: Fuller vs. Harris for MTG’s Former Seat
Voters in northwest Georgia head to the polls today in the special election runoff to fill the congressional seat vacated by former Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene. Trump-endorsed Republican Clay Fuller, a district attorney, faces Democrat Shawn Harris, a retired Army brigadier general, in a district Trump carried by 37 points in 2024. Republicans are widely favored to hold the seat, but Democrats view any strong showing as a signal heading into November. The winner must immediately begin campaigning again for a full term in the May primary.4,5
DHS Shutdown Now 52 Days Old; Trump Signs Back-Pay Order, House Vote Still Pending
The partial shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security has reached its 52nd day, with Congress not scheduled to return until the week of April 13. President Trump signed a presidential memorandum on Friday directing all 260,000 DHS employees to receive full back pay using available funds. The House is expected to consider the Senate-passed bill funding most of DHS, excluding ICE and Border Patrol, when lawmakers return next week as part of a two-track strategy that would pursue ICE funding separately through budget reconciliation.6,7
Trump’s 2027 Budget Calls for TSA Privatization and $152M to Reopen Alcatraz
The White House’s proposed fiscal year 2027 budget calls for cutting $52 million from TSA’s budget and beginning the privatization of airport security at small airports. The proposal also requests $152 million to begin converting Alcatraz Island into a working federal prison, drawing immediate criticism from former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who called the idea “a waste of taxpayer dollars.” The budget also includes a 44% increase in military spending and significant cuts to FEMA. All proposals require congressional approval.8,9,10
State Officials Warn Federal Voter Database Could Undermine 2026 Midterms
State election officials from both parties expressed concern Monday that the Trump administration’s effort to build a massive federal voter database, ordered through the president’s March 31 executive order on mail-in voting, could be exploited to cast doubt on the integrity of the 2026 midterms. Officials worry the database could be deployed politically rather than simply administratively. Multiple federal lawsuits challenging the underlying executive order remain pending.11,12

Wisconsin Votes Today on Supreme Court Seat; Liberal Majority Could Grow to 5-2
Wisconsin voters go to the polls today in a state Supreme Court race pitting liberal Appeals Court Judge Chris Taylor against conservative Judge Maria Lazar. A Taylor win would expand the court’s current 4-3 liberal majority to 5-2, locking in liberal control through at least 2030 and shaping upcoming cases on redistricting, abortion, and union rights. Taylor has significantly outpaced Lazar in both fundraising and advertising spending.13,14
California Governor Race: Both Republicans Could Advance, Potentially Shutting Out Democrats
New polling shows Republican candidates Steve Hilton and Chad Bianco leading a large, fragmented Democratic field in California’s June 2 gubernatorial primary. Under California’s top-two primary system, both Republicans could finish in the top two and advance to November, potentially shutting Democrats out of the general election entirely, a scenario not seen in the state in roughly two decades. Democratic Party Chair Rusty Hicks has urged weaker candidates to step aside, though none have yet done so.15,16
