House Passes 10-Day FISA Lifeline After GOP Civil War Overnight
After two failed votes and an all-night fight, the House passed a 10-day extension of Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act by unanimous consent early Friday. A five-year bill with minor reforms and a separate 18-month clean extension both collapsed when Republican members refused to get on board. Section 702 was set to expire Monday. The Senate must now return over the weekend to act before the deadline. 1, 2, 3
Trump: Iran Deal Is Close; Lebanon Ceasefire Takes Effect
President Trump declared Thursday that a permanent Iran ceasefire is “very close” and that talks could resume in Islamabad this weekend. A 10-day Israel-Lebanon ceasefire took effect Thursday evening, with Trump calling it “a historic day for Lebanon.” Iran’s military has warned it will block Persian Gulf and Red Sea shipping if the U.S. naval blockade on Iranian ports is not lifted. 4, 5, 6
Democrats File Six Impeachment Articles Against Hegseth
House Democrats filed six articles of impeachment against Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth Wednesday, citing the Iran war, mishandling of classified information on the Signal app, and obstruction of Congress. The effort is widely regarded as a political statement, as Republicans hold a 218-213 House majority, making conviction in the Senate all but impossible. 7, 8, 9
Progressive Mejia Wins NJ-11; House GOP Majority Shrinks
Democrat Analilia Mejia won Thursday’s New Jersey 11th District special election by roughly 20 points, filling the seat vacated by now-Governor Mikie Sherrill. Endorsed by Bernie Sanders and AOC, Mejia narrows the Republican House majority to 218-214. Democrats have now outperformed their 2024 presidential baseline in every special House election held this year. 10, 11, 12
Trump Rallies Las Vegas Workers on Tax Day; Gas Prices Sting
President Trump held a Tax Day roundtable in Las Vegas on Thursday touting his no-tax-on-tips policy, telling workers that Democrats voted against it and urging them to remember that in November. The event was undercut by Las Vegas gas prices averaging $5.00 per gallon, up 28% from last year, a contrast Democrats were quick to highlight. 13, 14
Democrats Move to Delay Warsh Fed Confirmation Hearing
All 11 Senate Banking Committee Democrats sent a letter Thursday demanding the April 21 confirmation hearing for Fed chair nominee Kevin Warsh be postponed pending Justice Department investigations into current Chair Jerome Powell and Governor Lisa Cook. Republican Sen. Thom Tillis has expressed similar reservations, making his vote the critical swing factor on the committee. 15, 16

Virginia Redistricting: Early Voting Closes Tomorrow
Early voting in Virginia’s redistricting referendum ends Saturday, ahead of the April 21 vote. If approved, the Democratic-controlled General Assembly could redraw congressional maps and shift Virginia’s delegation from 6-5 Democratic to a 10-1 Democratic supermajority. The latest polling shows 51% in favor and 45% opposed, with Northern Virginia turnout running 46% above the same period last fall. 17, 18
DeSantis Pushes Florida Redistricting Session to April 28
Governor Ron DeSantis announced Wednesday he is postponing Florida’s redistricting special session from April 20 to April 28, also expanding the agenda to include AI regulation and medical freedom measures.
