Trump to Address Nation Tonight on Iran War as U.S. Eyes Exit Within Weeks
President Trump announced Wednesday that the United States military could conclude its operations against Iran within two to three weeks, signaling a major shift after more than a month of combat. Trump told reporters he expects the U.S. to be “leaving very soon” and suggested that other nations dependent on Middle Eastern oil should take responsibility for reopening the Strait of Hormuz on their own. Trump is scheduled to deliver a prime-time national address at 9 p.m. ET on Wednesday regarding the Iran conflict, with the White House offering no additional details ahead of the speech.1,2,3

Supreme Court Hears Landmark Birthright Citizenship Arguments
The Supreme Court heard oral arguments Wednesday in Trump v. Barbara, one of the highest-profile cases in decades, examining whether President Trump’s executive order to end automatic birthright citizenship for children of undocumented or temporary-visa parents is constitutional. Every lower court to review the order has struck it down as a violation of the 14th Amendment’s Citizenship Clause. The administration argues that the phrase “subject to the jurisdiction thereof” limits citizenship rights based on parental immigration status. A ruling is expected by late June or early July.4,5
Trump Signs Executive Order Targeting Mail-In Voting; States Pledge Court Fight
President Trump signed an executive order Tuesday directing federal agencies to build a national list of verified eligible voters in each state and instructing the U.S. Postal Service to process mail-in ballots only for individuals on that list. Election law experts widely characterized the order as unconstitutional, since the authority to administer elections rests primarily with the states and Congress rather than the president. Arizona and Oregon were the first states to pledge immediate legal challenges, with Arizona Secretary of State Adrian Fontes calling it a “disgraceful overreach.”6,7,8
Federal Judge Halts Trump’s $400 Million White House Ballroom Project
U.S. District Judge Richard Leon issued a preliminary injunction Tuesday ordering the Trump administration to halt construction on a proposed 90,000-square-foot ballroom on the former site of the White House East Wing, finding that the project requires congressional authorization before it can proceed. The judge, appointed by George W. Bush, stated that “construction must cease unless and until Congress authorizes this project through statutory means.” Trump disputed the ruling on Truth Social, and the Justice Department filed an appeal the same day. The judge suspended his order for 14 days pending the appeal.9,10
Gas Prices Hit $4 a Gallon Amid Iran Conflict
The national average price for a gallon of gasoline reached $4.00 on Wednesday, driven by Iran’s ongoing closure of the Strait of Hormuz, through which roughly one-fifth of the world’s oil flows. Trump dismissed requests from allied nations for U.S. assistance in reopening the waterway, telling reporters those countries should “go get your own oil.” The $4.00 average represents a sharp increase from the pre-war average of $2.92 and adds to household cost pressures across the country. Trump said he expects prices to fall once the U.S. exits the conflict.1,11

Arizona and Oregon Move to Block Trump’s Mail-In Voting Order in Court
Arizona Secretary of State Adrian Fontes and Attorney General Kris Mayes announced Tuesday they are jointly preparing a legal challenge to President Trump’s executive order on mail-in voting, calling it “unconstitutional” and a “disgraceful overreach.” Fontes noted that roughly 80 percent of Arizona voters cast ballots by mail and that the mail-in system was designed and championed by Republicans in the state. Oregon election officials separately pledged their own legal action, arguing the Constitution reserves election administration authority to the states.12,13
California Ordered to Pay $4.5 Million After Losing School Gender Policy Case
A federal judge ordered California to pay $4.52 million in attorneys’ fees to the legal team that successfully challenged the state’s school policy of concealing students’ gender transitions from parents. U.S. District Judge Roger Benitez cited California’s “litigation intransigence” across a years-long case that ended with the state losing at the Supreme Court. The Thomas More Society, which represented parents and teachers in the case, called the ruling “an unmistakable message to state governments across the country.”14,15
Virginia Redistricting Special Election Underway; Ballot Measure Vote Set April 21
Early voting is currently open in Virginia for a special election ballot measure on April 21 that would temporarily give the state legislature authority to redraw congressional districts before the next census. If voters approve, a map already passed by the Democratic-controlled General Assembly would take effect and could shift up to four additional congressional seats toward Democrats in the November midterms. The proposed amendment has survived multiple court challenges since October 2025, with courts allowing the election to proceed while legal battles continue.16,17
