Trump Weighs Further Cabinet Changes Following Bondi Departure
In the days following his dismissal of Attorney General Pam Bondi, President Trump is now considering additional cabinet changes. According to multiple sources familiar with White House discussions, Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick are among those potentially at risk. The White House issued a public statement of “total confidence” in Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard after reports that Trump had expressed frustration with her over her relatively cautious stance on Iran. Sources described the president as open to personnel reshuffles as a way to signal direction heading into the midterm elections.1,2,3
Congress Pushes Back on Trump’s NATO Withdrawal Threat
Bipartisan lawmakers moved swiftly this week to counter President Trump’s statements that he is “beyond” reconsidering U.S. membership in NATO, which he called a “paper tiger” after allies declined to join the Iran conflict. Senators Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and Chris Coons (D-DE) issued a joint statement declaring that “Congress will not allow the United States to withdraw from NATO.” A 2023 law co-authored by then-Senator Marco Rubio, now Secretary of State, requires a two-thirds Senate vote or an act of Congress to authorize any withdrawal, making unilateral action by the president effectively off the table.4,5,6
Courts Flooded With Lawsuits Over Trump Mail-In Voting Order
Multiple legal challenges were filed this week against President Trump’s March 31 executive order directing the U.S. Postal Service to limit mail-in ballot delivery to voters on a federally verified citizenship list. The ACLU, Brennan Center, League of Women Voters, and Democratic campaign committees are among the groups that filed suit, arguing the order is unconstitutional because the Constitution assigns authority over elections to the states and Congress, not the executive branch. Election law experts across the political spectrum have broadly predicted the order will not survive court review.7,8,9
Trump Approval Hits New Second-Term Low as Gas Prices Climb
A CNN/SSRS poll released this week shows President Trump’s overall approval rating at 35 percent, with economic approval at just 31 percent, both new lows for his second term. The Silver Bulletin polling average puts his net approval at -16.9 as of April 3. Analysts attribute the decline largely to the Iran war’s effect on gas prices, which have now risen above $4 per gallon nationally. Republican support among voters under 45 has dropped sharply, falling 23 points since January among that group.10,11

Wisconsin Supreme Court Race Heads Into Final Days
Wisconsin voters go to the polls on Tuesday, April 7, in a state Supreme Court election that could deepen the court’s current 4-3 liberal majority to 5-2. The race features liberal candidate Judge Chris Taylor against conservative Judge Maria Lazar, with both serving on federal appeals courts. Early voting ends Sunday, April 5. Unlike recent Wisconsin Supreme Court contests that shattered spending records, this race has drawn under $9 million in total spending, though its outcome will shape the court’s composition on redistricting and abortion cases through at least 2030.12,13
Florida Braces for Two Back-to-Back Special Legislative Sessions
Florida lawmakers are preparing to return to Tallahassee for two separate special sessions in April, both with significant political implications. The first, scheduled for mid-April, will tackle the state budget after the regular session ended without a spending agreement for the second consecutive year, leaving a roughly $1.4 billion gap between House and Senate proposals. The second session, set for April 20-24, will address congressional redistricting. Republicans believe redrawing the maps could yield three to five additional GOP House seats ahead of the November midterms.14,15
Rhode Island Independent Enters Governor’s Race
Businessman and government watchdog Ken Block announced Friday that he is entering Rhode Island’s 2026 governor’s race as an independent, his third campaign for the office. Block previously ran under the Moderate Party banner in 2010 and as a Republican in 2014. He is the author of a 2024 book documenting his data-driven investigation that disproved allegations of fraud in the 2020 election, conducted on behalf of the Trump campaign. Block enters a field that already includes three Republicans and three Democrats, including a high-profile Democratic primary rematch between incumbent Governor Daniel McKee and former CVS executive Helena Buonanno Foulkes.16,17
