U.S. Airman Rescued From Iran After Daring Special Operations Mission
In the early hours of Sunday, President Trump announced on Truth Social that a U.S. Air Force colonel, whose F-15E Strike Eagle was shot down over Iran on Friday, has been successfully rescued by Navy SEAL Team 6. Trump called it “one of the most daring Search and Rescue Operations in U.S. History.” The officer evaded Iranian forces for nearly two days in a mountainous region before extraction. Three U.S. rescue aircraft were struck by Iranian fire during the mission, though all crews survived. Iran had publicly offered a reward to anyone who could help capture the airman.1,2,3
Trump Issues New 48-Hour Ultimatum to Iran Over Strait of Hormuz
President Trump issued a fresh 48-hour ultimatum to Iran on Saturday, warning that “all hell will reign down” if the country does not reopen the Strait of Hormuz or agree to a deal. The threat comes after Iran shot down an F-15E and struck U.S. rescue aircraft on Friday, escalating the conflict now in its fifth week. Trump had originally set an April 6 deadline tied to a 10-day extension he granted on March 26. Iran has not publicly responded.4,5
House Republicans Remain Divided as DHS Shutdown Enters Day 50
The partial Department of Homeland Security shutdown, now the longest in American history, stretched into its 50th day on Sunday with no resolution in sight. House Republicans are resisting Speaker Mike Johnson’s agreement with Senate Majority Leader John Thune to pass the Senate-passed bill funding all of DHS except ICE and Border Patrol. Conservative members are demanding a separate ICE reconciliation bill pass first. Both chambers remain on recess until April 13.6,7,8
Trump Signals Further Cabinet Changes; Zeldin Emerges as Top AG Pick
Following the dismissal of Attorney General Pam Bondi last Thursday, President Trump is vetting EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin as a permanent replacement, according to multiple sources. Deputy AG Todd Blanche continues as acting attorney general. Separately, reports indicate Trump has been asking advisors about the performance of Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, suggesting additional departures may follow.9,10,11

Wisconsin Supreme Court Race Enters Final Hours of Early Voting
Today is the last day for in-person early voting in Wisconsin ahead of Tuesday’s state Supreme Court election. Liberal Judge Chris Taylor faces conservative Judge Maria Lazar in a race that will shape the court’s decisions on redistricting, abortion, and voting rights through at least 2030, even though the court’s current 4-3 liberal majority is not at stake. Election Day is Tuesday, April 7, with same-day registration available at polling places.12,13
Georgia’s GA-14 Runoff on Tuesday; Democrat Leads Heading Into Final Stretch
Republican Clay Fuller, backed by President Trump, faces Democrat Shawn Harris, a retired Army brigadier general, in Tuesday’s runoff for Georgia’s 14th Congressional District, the seat vacated by Marjorie Taylor Greene. Harris led the March 10 jungle primary with 37 percent to Fuller’s 35 percent, but analysts still consider Fuller the favorite in this solidly Republican northwest Georgia district.14,15
California Democrats Scramble to Avoid GOP Lockout in June Governor Primary
Anxiety is growing among California Democrats over a potential Republican “lockout” in the June 2 primary. Under the state’s top-two primary system, GOP candidates Steve Hilton and Chad Bianco are statistically tied near the top of polls, while eight or more Democratic candidates continue splitting the liberal vote. If no Democrat finishes in the top two, Republicans would hold both spots in November for the first time in roughly two decades. The California Republican Party is set to vote on a gubernatorial endorsement this weekend.16,17
New Poll Raises Alarms for Democrats Ahead of Virginia Redistricting Vote
A new poll signals declining support for Virginia’s April 21 redistricting referendum, which would authorize the Democratic-controlled General Assembly to redraw congressional maps and potentially give Democrats a 10-1 advantage in the state’s congressional delegation. Republicans are campaigning hard against the measure, arguing it is an unconstitutional partisan power grab. Early voting on the referendum is currently underway.18,19
