Trump Issues 48-Hour Ultimatum to Iran Over Strait of Hormuz, Threatens to Strike Power Plants
President Trump issued a dramatic ultimatum to Iran on Saturday evening, threatening to “hit and obliterate” the country’s power plants if the Strait of Hormuz is not fully reopened within 48 hours. “If Iran doesn’t FULLY OPEN, WITHOUT THREAT, the Strait of Hormuz, within 48 HOURS from this exact point in time, the United States of America will hit and obliterate their various POWER PLANTS, STARTING WITH THE BIGGEST ONE FIRST,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. The threat represents a significant shift, as the administration had previously avoided targeting Iran’s energy infrastructure out of concern for global economic consequences. The “biggest one first” is widely believed to refer to Iran’s Bushehr nuclear power plant, a facility that has historically been considered off-limits due to the risk of environmental catastrophe. Iran’s military responded by warning that any strikes on its energy infrastructure would be met with retaliatory attacks on American-affiliated energy targets throughout the Gulf region.1,2,3
Iranian Missiles Strike Israeli Cities of Dimona and Arad, Wounding Over 180
Iran launched ballistic missile strikes on Saturday evening against the southern Israeli cities of Dimona and Arad, wounding more than 180 people in what marked a dangerous new escalation in the conflict. Dimona is home to Israel’s primary nuclear research facility, and Iranian officials said the attack was a direct response to the U.S.-Israeli strike on Iran’s Natanz nuclear enrichment site the day before. In Arad, a missile carrying hundreds of kilograms of explosives struck between apartment buildings, wounding at least 84 people, including a five-year-old girl listed in serious condition. In Dimona, a missile directly hit a building, injuring over 40 people, including a 10-year-old boy who was hit by shrapnel. The International Atomic Energy Agency confirmed that no damage was detected at the nearby nuclear research center. Israel’s military launched an investigation into its air defense systems’ failure to intercept both missiles. IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir said the campaign was at its “halfway” point and approved additional strikes “across all fronts.”4,5,6,7
War Spreads Across the Region as Gulf States Intercept Iranian Attacks and Saudi Arabia Expels Diplomats
The Iran conflict continued to spread beyond Israel on Saturday, with multiple Gulf states reporting intercepted missile and drone attacks on their territory. Saudi Arabia declared several Iranian diplomats “persona non grata,” including the military attaché, and ordered them to leave within 24 hours after Saudi air defenses shot down 20 Iranian drones. The United Arab Emirates reported intercepting four ballistic missiles and 26 drones, bringing its total since the start of the war to 338 ballistic missiles, 15 cruise missiles, and 1,740 drones. Bahrain said it had intercepted 139 ballistic missiles and 238 drones since the conflict began. Jordan’s military reported that 240 missiles and drones have been fired at Jordanian territory since the war started, wounding 24 people. Israel also launched a wave of strikes on Hezbollah targets in Beirut early Saturday after issuing evacuation warnings for several neighborhoods. The Arab Interior Ministers Council issued a joint statement condemning Iran’s “malicious and repeated aggression against Arab countries.”8,9,10,11
Robert Mueller, Former FBI Director and Special Counsel, Dies at 81; Trump Says He Is ‘Glad’
Robert S. Mueller III, who served as FBI Director for 12 years and was later appointed as special counsel to investigate Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election, died on Friday at the age of 81. His family confirmed the death in a statement but did not provide a cause. Mueller’s investigation into potential ties between Russia and the Trump campaign resulted in a 448-page report that documented ten instances of possible obstruction of justice, concluding that while the report “did not conclude that the President committed a crime, it also does not exonerate him.” President Trump responded within minutes on Truth Social, writing: “Robert Mueller just died. Good, I’m glad he’s dead. He can no longer hurt innocent people!” The remark drew widespread criticism from both Democrats and some Republicans, though Trump has a long history of making harsh statements about those he views as political adversaries.12,13,14
Trump Threatens to Deploy ICE Agents to Airports Monday as DHS Shutdown Enters Second Month
President Trump warned on Saturday that he will deploy Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents to U.S. airports beginning Monday unless Democrats agree to fund the Department of Homeland Security, which has now been partially shut down for over a month. “I look forward to moving ICE in on Monday, and have already told them to, ‘GET READY.’ NO MORE WAITING, NO MORE GAMES!” Trump wrote on Truth Social. The shutdown has caused growing chaos at airports nationwide, as TSA agents, who are working without pay, have been calling in sick or resigning at increasing rates. The Department of Homeland Security reported that absence rates among TSA personnel are averaging 20 percent at some airports, contributing to hours-long security lines during peak spring break travel. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy warned that smaller airports could face complete shutdowns due to staffing shortages. Democrats blocked legislation to reopen DHS for the fifth time on Friday, continuing to demand changes to immigration enforcement policies as a condition for funding.15,16,17
Elon Musk Offers to Pay TSA Salaries During Shutdown; Legal Experts Say It Is Not Possible
Elon Musk offered on Saturday to personally cover the salaries of TSA agents who have gone unpaid during the DHS shutdown. “I would like to offer to pay the salaries of TSA personnel during this funding impasse that is negatively affecting the lives of so many Americans at airports throughout the country,” Musk wrote on X. Senator John Fetterman of Pennsylvania, the only Democrat who has voted with Republicans to fund DHS, called the offer “incredibly generous” and noted that TSA agents across the country are relying on food pantries and community donations to get by. However, legal experts and multiple news outlets noted that federal law prohibits agencies from accepting private funding for payroll, making the offer unlikely to be carried out regardless of intent. The average TSA agent earns between $40,000 and $50,000 annually, and the department employs roughly 50,000 agents nationwide.18,19,20
