Israel Strikes Iran’s South Pars Gas Field; Iran Retaliates Against Gulf Energy Sites
The Iran war took a dangerous new turn on Wednesday after Israel attacked Iran’s South Pars gas field, one of the largest natural gas reserves in the world, shared between Iran and Qatar. Iran’s president warned of “uncontrollable consequences” that could affect the entire planet. In retaliation, Iran launched missile and drone strikes against energy facilities in Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Kuwait, causing what Qatari officials described as “extensive damage” at the Ras Laffan liquefied natural gas complex. Saudi Arabia’s top diplomat said the attacks meant “what little trust there was before has completely been shattered.” President Trump stated on Truth Social that the United States “knew nothing” about Israel’s strike on South Pars and declared that Israel would not carry out further attacks on the gas field. However, he warned that if Iran continues to attack Qatar’s energy infrastructure, the United States would “massively blow up the entirety of the South Pars Gas Field at an amount of strength and power that Iran has never seen or witnessed before.” Oil prices surged past $115 per barrel on Thursday morning as markets reacted to the escalating attacks on global energy infrastructure.1,2,3,4
Trump Attends Dignified Transfer of Six Airmen Killed in Iraq
President Trump traveled to Dover Air Force Base in Delaware on Wednesday for the dignified transfer of six U.S. Air Force crew members whose remains were returned to their families. The six airmen were killed when their KC-135 refueling aircraft crashed in allied territory in western Iraq while supporting operations against Iran. This was the second dignified transfer the president has attended since the war with Iran began on February 28, following a March 7 ceremony for six service members killed by a drone strike in Kuwait.5,6
FBI Opens Investigation into Joe Kent Over Alleged Intelligence Leak
The FBI has opened an investigation into Joe Kent, the former Director of the National Counterterrorism Center who resigned on Tuesday in protest of the war with Iran. According to reports from the New York Times, NBC News, and CBS News, the investigation concerns the possible unauthorized disclosure of classified information and predates Kent’s resignation. Kent made headlines this week as the highest-ranking Trump administration official to publicly break with the president over the Iran campaign. In his resignation letter, posted to X, Kent argued that Iran posed “no imminent threat” to the United States and accused the administration of going to war “due to pressure from Israel and its powerful American lobby.”7,8,9
Senate Again Blocks War Powers Resolution to Restrict Iran Campaign
The Senate voted 53 to 47 on Wednesday to defeat a war powers resolution that would have blocked President Trump from escalating the war with Iran. It was the third time since the conflict began that Senate Democrats tried and failed to win passage of a resolution requiring Trump to obtain congressional authorization before continuing military operations. Senator John Fetterman of Pennsylvania was the only Democrat to vote against the resolution, while Republican Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky crossed party lines to support it. Congress has not formally authorized the use of military force against Iran.10,11
Gabbard and Ratcliffe Testify Before Senate Intelligence Committee on Iran Threat
Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard and CIA Director John Ratcliffe testified Wednesday before the Senate Intelligence Committee as part of the annual worldwide threats hearing, though questioning focused heavily on the war with Iran. Under repeated pressure from senators, Gabbard declined to directly state whether Iran posed an “imminent threat” to the United States before the start of hostilities on February 28. She told lawmakers that Iran’s “conventional military power projection capabilities have largely been destroyed” and that its “strategic position has been significantly degraded.” Both officials lined up behind the Trump administration’s position that the military action was justified.12,13
Federal Reserve Holds Rates Steady; Powell Says He Will Not Resign Until DOJ Probe Concludes
The Federal Reserve held its benchmark interest rate unchanged at 3.5% to 3.75% on Wednesday, citing increased uncertainty from the war in the Middle East. Fed Chair Jerome Powell also announced that he has “no intention of leaving the board until the investigation is well and truly over, with transparency and finality,” referring to the Justice Department probe into his congressional testimony and a renovation project at the Fed’s headquarters. Powell characterized the investigation as an “intimidation” tactic in the administration’s ongoing campaign to pressure him on interest rates. His statement puts additional pressure on the DOJ to either drop the investigation or see Kevin Warsh’s confirmation to replace Powell as chair remain delayed.14,15
Mullin DHS Confirmation Hearing Turns Combative as Paul Announces Opposition
Senator Markwayne Mullin’s confirmation hearing to become Secretary of Homeland Security turned contentious on Wednesday when Committee Chairman Rand Paul announced he would vote against the nomination. Paul accused Mullin of “anger issues” and played video of a near-brawl between Mullin and a union leader at a 2023 hearing. Mullin, nominated after Trump fired Kristi Noem on March 5, indicated he would support requiring judicial warrants for immigration home entries and signaled openness to adjusting certain enforcement policies. Paul warned he would cancel Thursday’s committee vote unless Mullin agreed to a classified session to address what Paul called “stolen valor” allegations related to Mullin’s claims of having observed war firsthand.16,17
Democrats Walk Out of Bondi Briefing on Epstein Files Over Subpoena Dispute
House Democrats walked out of a closed-door briefing with Attorney General Pam Bondi on Wednesday after she declined to commit to complying with a subpoena requiring her sworn testimony on April 14 before the House Oversight Committee. The subpoena concerns the Justice Department’s handling of documents related to the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. When asked afterward whether she would comply, Bondi said only that she would “follow the law.” Committee Chairman James Comer, who opposed issuing the subpoena in the first place despite a bipartisan committee vote approving it, said he does not believe Bondi needs to sit for a deposition.18,19
Musk Pressures Thune on SAVE America Act as Senate Debate Continues
Elon Musk intensified his public campaign on Wednesday pushing Senate Majority Leader John Thune to pass the SAVE America Act, which would require proof of citizenship to register to vote and government-issued photo ID to cast a ballot. Musk has been posting aggressively on X in support of the legislation, though he has not yet spent money to promote it. The Senate began extended debate on the bill on Tuesday after a 51-48 vote to proceed, but the measure lacks the 60 votes needed to overcome a Democratic filibuster. President Trump has pressured Thune to eliminate the filibuster, but Thune has said he does not have the votes for that step. All 45 Democrats and both independents oppose the bill.20,21
DHS Shutdown Passes 30 Days; TSA Warns of Possible Airport Closures
The partial government shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security has now stretched past 30 days, with approximately 50,000 TSA officers continuing to work without pay. Acting Deputy TSA Administrator Adam Stahl warned that if the standoff continues, the agency “may have to quite literally shut down airports, particularly smaller ones.” DHS reported that 366 TSA officers have resigned since the shutdown began in February, and more than half of TSA employees at Houston-area airports called out during recent shifts. The shutdown centers on Democratic demands to require immigration agents to obtain judicial warrants before searches and to ban agents from wearing masks during enforcement operations.22,23
FBI Analyzing Apparent Improvised Explosive Device Found Outside MacDill Air Force Base
The FBI disclosed on Wednesday that it is analyzing a suspicious package found Monday outside the visitor center at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, Florida. Field screening identified “possible energetic materials” in the package, though final lab analysis has not been completed. Military officials raised the base’s threat level to FPCON Charlie, the second-highest force protection level, and a separate shelter-in-place order was issued on Wednesday afternoon after an additional threat was made against the base. The shelter-in-place order was lifted several hours later after the threat was cleared.24,25
Treasury Eases Venezuela Sanctions to Boost Oil Supply During Iran War
The Treasury Department on Wednesday eased sanctions on Venezuela, allowing U.S. companies to resume business with the country’s state-owned oil and gas company as the administration seeks to increase global oil supplies amid surging prices driven by the Iran war. Bloomberg reported that additional individual licenses for foreign companies to operate in Venezuela could be announced in the coming days. Analysts expect Venezuela to increase production by no more than 300,000 barrels per day in 2026, a relatively small amount compared to global demand.26,27
Newsmax Executive Named Deputy Director of Voice of America
The U.S. Agency for Global Media on Wednesday named Christopher Wallace, a news director at Newsmax, as the deputy director of Voice of America. The appointment raised concerns that the Trump administration is seeking to influence the editorial independence of the government-funded news outlet. The move came just one day after a federal judge ordered the agency to reinstate more than 1,000 full-time VOA employees who had been placed on leave, ruling that Trump administration official Kari Lake’s efforts to dismantle the network were “arbitrary and capricious.”28,29
Texas Senate Runoff Locked In After Trump Declines to Endorse Cornyn or Paxton
The deadline for candidates to withdraw from the Texas Republican Senate primary runoff passed on Tuesday without action from either Senator John Cornyn or Attorney General Ken Paxton, locking both into a May 26 contest. President Trump had pledged to endorse one of the two candidates and urge the other to drop out, but he allowed the deadline to pass without making a pick. The runoff sets up another expensive period of intraparty fighting, with both candidates already spending heavily on attack ads since the March 3 primary.30,31

California Lawmakers Push to Rename Cesar Chavez Day After Sexual Abuse Allegations
Members of California’s Latino Legislative Caucus met in the state Capitol on Wednesday to discuss renaming the state’s Cesar Chavez Day holiday following an explosive New York Times investigation alleging that the civil rights icon groomed and sexually abused girls who worked in the farmworkers movement. Governor Gavin Newsom said he is open to renaming the March 31 holiday, calling it a “sensitive moment” for the state. The United Farm Workers canceled its annual events celebrating Chavez and described the allegations as “profoundly shocking.” Commemorative marches were canceled in Denver, Austin, Tucson, and San Antonio, while officials in multiple states began reconsidering the names of streets and schools that honor Chavez. Dolores Huerta, Chavez’s most prominent co-leader in the farmworkers movement, disclosed for the first time that Chavez sexually assaulted her as well.32,33,34
New York MTA Sues Trump Administration Over Withheld Subway Funding
New York’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority filed a lawsuit on Tuesday against the Trump administration, alleging breach of contract after the federal government withheld nearly $60 million in funding promised for the Second Avenue Subway extension into East Harlem. The $7.7 billion project, which includes a $3.4 billion federal share, was frozen last October when the administration cited concerns about the MTA’s diversity, equity, and inclusion practices in contracting. Governor Kathy Hochul blamed Trump directly, saying the decision “has placed the commutes of over 200,000 New Yorkers and the jobs of thousands of union workers at risk.” The dispute follows a similar fight over the Gateway Hudson River tunnel project, where federal funding was restored only after a court order earlier this year.35,36
Idaho Governor Signs $131 Million in Spending Cuts as Budget Battle With Legislature Continues
Idaho Governor Brad Little signed $131.3 million in spending cuts into law on Monday, including an additional 1% reduction imposed by the legislature that the governor did not request. The cuts affect nearly every state agency but spare K-12 education, meaning higher education will take a disproportionately large share of the reductions. The bill passed the Senate by a single vote, well below the threshold needed to override a veto. The signing comes amid an ongoing dispute between the governor and Republican legislative leaders over tax cuts linked to President Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill, which Little ultimately agreed to implement immediately rather than delay until July.37
