Republican Leaders Announce Deal to End Record DHS Shutdown
House Speaker Mike Johnson and Senate Majority Leader John Thune announced Wednesday a two-track agreement to end the 47-day partial shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security, the longest in American history. Under the plan, the House will take up the Senate-passed bill that funds most of DHS except Immigration and Customs Enforcement through September, while Republicans separately pursue three years of ICE and Border Patrol funding through budget reconciliation, which bypasses the Senate filibuster. Congress remains on recess until April 13, and the actual votes have not yet taken place.1,2,3
Trump’s Iran Speech Draws Mixed Reaction as War Continues
Following President Trump’s Wednesday prime-time address declaring that U.S. military objectives in Iran are “nearing completion,” reaction in Washington was divided Thursday. Trump told the nation the conflict would conclude within two to three weeks, but he offered no specific timeline for ending hostilities. He also declined to commit to reopening the Strait of Hormuz, saying that responsibility belongs to nations that rely on its oil. Some Republicans, including Senator Lindsey Graham, praised the speech as a defining moment, while critics noted that Trump’s conflicting signals have continued to rattle markets and a war-weary public.4,5,6
Democrats File Federal Lawsuit to Block Trump’s Mail-In Voting Order
The Democratic National Committee, the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, the Democratic Governors Association, and congressional Democratic leaders filed suit Wednesday in federal court seeking to immediately block President Trump’s executive order restricting mail-in voting. The complaint argues that Trump has no constitutional authority to regulate who may vote by mail, a power the Constitution reserves for the states and Congress. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said, “We will confront him in court and we will prevail once more.” Trump dismissed the challenge at the signing ceremony, suggesting only a “rogue judge” could block his order.7,8,9
Trump Mulls Firing Attorney General Pam Bondi Over Epstein File Handling
Multiple sources told CNN and The New York Times on Wednesday that President Trump has privately discussed replacing Attorney General Pam Bondi with EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin, driven largely by frustration over her handling of the Jeffrey Epstein documents. No final decision has been made, and Trump publicly called Bondi “a wonderful person” who is “doing a good job.” Bondi is scheduled for a deposition before the House Oversight Committee on April 14 regarding the Epstein investigation. Bondi’s supporters sought to counter the speculation by circulating images of her accompanying the president to the Supreme Court earlier that day.10,11,12
Birthright Citizenship Case: Supreme Court Justices Press Both Sides
In a follow-up to Wednesday’s landmark oral arguments in Trump v. Barbara, legal analysts noted Thursday that conservative justices appeared skeptical of the administration’s position, with Chief Justice John Roberts telling the government’s attorney that its supporting examples seemed “quite peculiar.” Justice Neil Gorsuch described the legal question as “quite convoluted.” President Trump made history by attending the arguments in person, the first sitting president ever to do so. A ruling from the Court’s 6-3 conservative majority is expected by late June or early July.13,14

Florida’s State SAVE Act Signed, Immediately Challenged in Court
Governor Ron DeSantis signed Florida’s version of the SAVE America Act on Wednesday, requiring voters to provide proof of citizenship and a government-issued photo ID to register and cast a ballot. The law takes effect January 1, 2027, after the November midterms. Within minutes of the signing, voting rights attorney Mark Elias and a coalition that includes the League of Women Voters of Florida, Common Cause, and the Hispanic Federation filed suit in federal court, arguing the law violates the First and Fourteenth Amendments by placing an undue burden on the right to vote.15,16,17
California Governor’s Race Alarms Democrats as Republicans Lead Polls
Democratic anxiety over California’s June 2 gubernatorial primary intensified this week, with a new poll showing Republican candidates Steve Hilton and Chad Bianco holding the top two spots among likely primary voters while more than two dozen Democrats split the remaining vote. Under California’s “top two” primary system, only the top two finishers advance to November regardless of party, meaning Democrats risk being shut out of the general election for the first time in roughly two decades. State Democratic Party Chair Rusty Hicks has urged weaker Democratic candidates to drop out before voting begins.18,19

Could There Possibly Be a Democratic Version of Project 2025?
This week’s Wednesday Insight report does exactly that. In Project 2028: A Hypothetical Far-Left Policy Blueprint, we constructed a maximalist progressive counterpart to the right’s controversial governing roadmap, following the same structure and logic, but from the complete opposite end of the political spectrum.
The result is genuinely revealing. When you place the two blueprints side by side, patterns emerge about how both extremes think about power, policy, and governance in ways that a standard political debate never quite surfaces.
We think you will find the comparison as thought-provoking as we did.
